The Minnesota Chapter of the National Medical Association (Minnesota Association of Black Doctors or Minnesota Association of African American Physicians) awarded 3 scholarships, October 23, 2019, totaling $1,000 today to students at the High School for Recording Arts (St. Paul, MN), a charter school, founded by David Ellis that is doing miraculous things for getting at-risk youth to graduate from high school. The 3 students were: J'Ceon Harris, Rocko Lee Hale, and Antrel Elohn Rhodes. They now even have a graduate program, Diverse Media Institute (DMI).
The scholarships were named in honor of 3 outstanding African-American Minnesota physicians (passed) who were involved in the Minnesota Chapter of the National Medical Association. The scholarships were named for: Dan Gaither, M.D., Donald Brown, M.D., and Curtis Davis, M.D.
The students seemed genuinely touched.

EAGAN, Minn. October 07, 2019. The Minnesota Chapter of the National Medical Association (a.k.a. The Minnesota Association of Black Physicians/The Minnesota Association of African-American Physicians) was pleased to award two scholarships to 2 senior medical students at the University of Minnesota Medical School at a ceremony on campus, Wednesday, September 25, 2019. The named awards recognized outstanding achievement in the area of medical student performance. Ms. Danielle Brewer was given the Rodney Wayne England, M.D. Scholarship. Dr. England grew up in Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School. He did his residency training at the Minneapolis V.A. hospital, Ramsey Hospital, and Hennepin County hospital. Dr. England was a pioneering Internal Medicine Physician who had a private practice in St. Paul and served the citizens in a sterling manner for over 40 years. He was married to Pat, and they had five children, 2 of whom are practicing physicians in the Twin Cities. Ms. Danielle Brewer graduated from Blake School in 2012 and Howard University in 2016.
Ms. Lauren Nichols was given the Dr. Cassius Marcellus Clay Ellis Scholarship. Dr. Ellis was born in Kentucky and graduated from Meharry Medical College in 1962. Dr. Ellis was one of the first Presidents of the Minnesota chapter of the National Medical Association. Dr. Ellis was also a renown surgeon. He trained many Minnesota surgeons and had a strong affiliation and respect from the University of Minnesota Medical School, Minnesota Board of Medical Practice, U.S. Army, and North Memorial hospital. His wife was Phyllis, and they had four children together. Ms. Lauren Nichols graduated from Robbinsdale Armstrong High School in 2011 and St. Olaf College in 2015.
Both Danielle and Lauren are completing their fourth year of medical school and will graduate in May 2020. They both have a keen interest in Pediatrics.

October 10, 2018 St. Paul, MN- In an official announcement, the Minnesota Association of Black Physicians today announced their endorsement and support of Tim Walz and Peggy Flanagan for Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota. The organization cited a commitment to remove health care disparities as a primary reason for the decision.
“After considering all the candidates and their positions on healthcare, especially for Communities of Color, we strongly support Tim Walz for Governor,” stated Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D., MABP President. Dr. Crutchfield and his colleagues specifically cited the commitment shown by Walz/Flanagan to a strong public health care option for those who may have been excluded from coverage in the past.
“The future of every community requires access to quality care,” Crutchfield continued. “While we seek to protect the doctor/patient relationship, we believe that relationship is not available to too many who have historically been left behind. Tim Walz appears best suited among the leading candidates to address coverage gaps that are unacceptable in Minnesota today.”
