Wanda Adefris, M.D.

Dr. Adefris received her undergraduate degree from Brown University in Providence, Rhode
Island, in 1984, then earned her medical degree from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1988.
Her internship and residency were completed in 1992 at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
After working in private practice in Atlanta, Dr. Adefris and her family relocated to Minneapolis
in 1994. She is board-certified and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists.
Kimberly Anderson

After completing Graduate Studies at the University of Minnesota in 2005, Kimberly began her
career in hand occupational therapy at Park Nicollet. She has since practiced as a hand
occupational therapist for metro primary care and hand orthopedic and plastic surgery providers
in rehabilitation of post-surgery and non-surgery conditions of the hand to shoulder including
arthritis, fractures, and tendonitis. Kimberly became interested in her profession through a high
school sports medicine class twenty years ago. She enjoys treating the full spectrum of hand and
arm conditions and places a personal emphasis on thorough physical examinations, extensive
patient education, evidenced-backed rehab, and quick return to function (daily life, work and
sports). Lastly, she makes it a priority to keep current with the latest rehab and medical literature
on the science of pain and holistic treatment approaches.
Melvin Ashford

Melvin Ashford is a physician in the Twins Cities working in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
He currently works at the Minnesota Women’s Care located in Maplewood, Minnesota.
His specialty area is in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery
(Urogynecology). He is from Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Boston University
School of Medicine. Melvin has received several awards including the Dorothy Marvin
Award, the UMDMNJ Chairman’s Award and he has been recognized by Minneapolis St.
Paul Magazine as a Top Doc five years in a row. He is a member of several medical
soceities. Melvin and his wife Jackie are the parents of four wonderful children Cameron,
Max, Ella, and Hudson.
Aisha Baker

Aisha Baker works as a clinic nurse at Park Nicollet Healthcare in Minneapolis. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from University of St. Catherine in St. Paul. Aisha enjoys being a nurse and she says she get more from her patients than what she gives them. In her free time she enjoys singing, songwriting pop, rock and jazz music, traveling abroad as well as throughout the United States.
Joel L. Boyd, M.D.

Dr. Boyd is an associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He is a graduate of Temple University School of Medicine. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic and fellowship at the University of Western Ontario. His clinical interests include sports medicine, specializing in knee surgery including arthroscopy, ACL injuries, multiple ligament injuries, reconstructions and revision ACL reconstructions, partial and total joint arthroplasty. Dr. Boyd is currently the Team Physician for Minnesota Wild for the past 18 years. He is also the Team Physician for University of Minnesota Football. Dr. Boyd has been involved with USA Hockey as National Head Team Physician, several World Hockey Championships and the 1998 Nagano Olympics with USA Hockey, previous NFL team physician for nine years with the Minnesota Vikings, previous WNBA Lynx team physician for the past 15 years. His primary practice is at TRIA Orthopaedic Center in Bloomington, Minnesota and the University of Minnesota.
Lois Cannon

Lois Cannon is a Certified Nurse Midwife that has worked for Health Partners since 2002. Lois moved from California to Minneapolis in 1984. She is a graduate from California State University at Hayward (now Cal State Eastbay) and the University of Minnesota where she earned a Master of Nursing in Midwifery degree in 1996. As a professional Midwife Lois provides primary maternity care services to help women of all ages, including their newborns attain, regain, and maintain health. She also emphasize health promotion and education, disease prevention and informed decision making. Lois is married to a wonderful husband, the Honorable Judge James Cannon and has two amazing children. Lois loves her profession and she thanks God for allowing her to serve women of all backgrounds, races, ethnicities and faiths.
Blanche Chavers

Blanche Chavers, MD is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital. He attended medical at the University of Washington, Seattle. She has earned the University of Minnesota Clinical Research Scholar Award and is a member of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology, and the American Society of Transplantation. She was also the first African American female medical school graduate from the University of Washington and the first African American Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. Blanche is originally from Clarksdale, Missouri and she is married to Gubare Mpambara and they have a son named Kaita Mpambara.
Iris H. Cornelius, Ph.D.

Dr. Iris Cornelius is a nationally known psychologist, teacher, and consultant specializing in child and family psychology, integrative practices, coaching, and leadership development. She has devoted her professional practice as a psychologist to mental health in schools, hospitals and community treatment programs with a focus on creating and improving systems that develop belonging and cultural identity within families and work groups.
In 2004, Dr. Cornelius founded a non-profit organization, I AM Resources, focused on increasing learning outcomes for students of color. I AM Resources was instrumental in bringing funding and licensed professionals to form a Saturday School at Ames Elementary School in St. Paul’s East Side neighborhood that ran for seven years. Now serving over 400 students, I AM Resources brings psychological services and integrative mind-body programming to children, teachers and parents in three school sites within Saint Paul Public Schools. Dr. Cornelius received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Brown University, an M.S. degree in Psychology from Howard University, and earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Washington.
Susan Ellis Crutchfield-Mitsch, MD

Susan Ellis Crutchfield-Mitsch, MD is a retired Family Medicine physician. In 1963, she was the first African-American woman to ever graduate from the University of Minnesota Medical School. At age 22, she was also the youngest ever to graduate from the University of Minnesota Medical School. She engaged in private practice and was an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota. She was also the senior Vice President of Prudential Life Insurance Company in charge of medical affairs. She later became the medical director of Metropolitan Health Plan and Chairwoman of the Board of Children’s Hospitals.
Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D.

Dr. Crutchfield grew up in St. Paul. His family was the first African-American family to move into Highland Park. His parents were both physicians and featured in earlier (and this) editions of this series. Dr. Crutchfield graduated from Minnehaha Academy, Carleton College, Mayo Clinic Graduate School and Medical School. He completed his Transitional internship at the Gundersen Clinic and his Dermatology Residency at the University of Minnesota. He was the first African-American dermatologist to practice privately in Minnesota. He has a robust solo practice of dermatology of 18 years in Eagan, MN. He has received numerous recognition honors from his peers. He is a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of Minnesota Medical School and Distinguished Benedict Professor of Biology at Carleton College. He has written the weekly health column in the Minnesota Spokesman-recorder newspaper for several years, has co-authored a textbook of dermatology, and published over 300 scholarly and informative medical articles. He is a member of the AOA National Honor Medical Society and is the current president of the Minnesota Association of Black Physicians. He is a founding member of Minnesota’s Black Community Project, the driving force behind this book.
Dr. Charles E. Crutchfield Sr.

Dr. Charles E. Crutchfield Sr. retired as obstetrician-gynecologist (OBGYN) in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He was affiliated with multiple hospitals in the St. Paul area, including Regions Hospital and United Hospital. He received his medical degree from University of Minnesota Medical School and practiced OBGYN medicine for several decades. He was one of 49 doctors at Regions Hospital and one of 62 at United Hospital who specialize in Obstetrics & Gynecology.
Michael “Mike” England, M.D.

Dr. England is a native of Highland Park, St. Paul. Mike obtained his medical degree from Mayo Medical School, Rochester, MN in May 1986. He completed his internship and residency at Mayo Clinic department of Surgery in July 1991 and received board certification from the American Board of Surgery in June 1992. He entered private practice in August 1991 and has been with Minnesota Surgical Associates, P.A. in St. Paul since 1994. He is the brother of Stephen England, MD and the son of Rodney England, MD a pioneering African American physician in Minnesota.

He attended Cornell University Medical College, New York City, NY for Medical School and his Surgical Residency. Stephen earned a Master of Public Health, at John Hopkins University - Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is a pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon with Tria Orthopedic. He is the brother of Michael England, MD and the son of Rodney England MD, a pioneering African American physician in Minnesota.

He has worked for 20 years in clinical medicine, publish in scientific journal and textbooks and served has served as a medical editor. Alyse Marie Hamilton

Alyse Marie Hamilton, M.D. was born in Chinle, Arizona (Navajo Reservation). She graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School. She currently practices at Advanced Health and Vitality center. Alyse specializes in Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, Nutritional Assessment/Therapy; and Advanced Lyme; Natural Infusion Therapies for Immune System and Nutritional Support. She holds memberships at the American Academy of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine and Minnesota Holistic Medical Group. Alyse and her husband Michael have one child and six grandchildren.
Dionne Hart

Dr. Hart is the medical director of Care from the Hart, which provides patient advocacy and psychiatric consultation services. Dr. Hart is board certified in both Addiction Medicine and Psychiatry. She is an adjunct assistant professor at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. In 2013, Dr. Hart received the Minnesota Medical Association's Minority Affairs Meritorious Service Award. In 2014, she was named the Minnesota Psychiatric Society’s Psychiatrist of the Year. In 2016, she became the first African American woman to be elected to the Minnesota Medical Association’s Board of Trustees. In 2017, Dr. Hart was one of five psychiatrists in the nation to receive the National Alliance on Mental Illness Exemplary Psychiatrist Award. That same year, she was elected into the American College of Psychiatrists, an honorary medical organization for psychiatrists. She also received the Minnesota Medical Association’s President’s Award. In 2018, she was named a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
David Hamlar MD, DDS

David Hamlar MD, DDS is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He specializes Craniofacial Skull Base Surgery. Andrew Kiragu, MD

Zeke J. McKinney, MD, MHI, MPH

Dr. McKinney is a board-certified Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM) physician who works as the primary OEM provider at the HealthPartners Riverway Clinic in Anoka, MN. He is additionally board-certified in Public Health & General Preventive Medicine, as well as in Clinical Informatics, which is the practice of optimizing information in the delivery of healthcare. He grew up in North Minneapolis, then finished high school at Phillips Academy Andover, in Massachusetts. He then completed a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Engineering. He then attended medical school at the University of Minnesota, where he completed a dual-degree MD/Master of Health Informatics program. He began his graduate medical education in a General Surgery internship at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, followed by OEM training at the HealthPartners/University of Minnesota OEM Residency in St. Paul, MN.
Tamiko Foster

Dr. Tamiko Foster, MD, MPH, FAAP, is a board-certified pediatrician and fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She attended college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and medical school at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2016, she was selected as a Commonwealth Fund Mongan Fellow in Minority Health Policy at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health/Harvard Medical School, where she received her Master's in Public Health/Health Policy. Dr. Foster’s work has primarily focused on caring for medically and socially high-risk populations with a holistic and integrative approach to wellness. She is a health advocate, mentor, speaker and founder of the health and wellness company 2 E.D.I.F.Y., LLC, which is dedicated to social justice and equity in healthcare and bringing healing to individuals and communities. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., MN National Medical Association, and Harvard Club of Minnesota.
Inell Rosario

Dr. Rosario was born and raised on Andros, an island in the Bahamas. She graduated from Macalester College in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts and went on to attend medical school at the University of Minnesota. She then completed her internship and residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She is board-certified in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, and sleep medicine. She is the president of Andros ENT & Sleep Center. She is the former president of the Minnesota Association of Black Physicians. When she isn’t working at the clinic, Dr. Rosario likes to exercise, play basketball, and do mission work. She is married and has two children. He husband Louis is the Director of the Ramsey County Assessor department.
Nneka Sederstrom

Dr. Nneka Sederstrom, originally from Florence Alabama, received her BA in Philosophy from the George Washington University in 2001. She began her career as a volunteer in the Center for Ethics at Medstar Washington Hospital Center that summer. She continued her academic career while working at the Center and received her MA in Philosophy in 2003 and PhD in Medical Sociology in 2008. After beginning her PhD studies, she was made Director of the Center for Ethics and Director of the Spiritual Care Department. She proceeded to hold these positions until she left to join Children’s Hospital of Minnesota in March 2016. Her academic credentials include an MPH in Global Health Management. Nneka is married to Charlie Sederstrom and they have a little boy named Grayson. She loves to bake, knit, and yell ‘Roll Tide!’
Barbara Toppin, M

Dr. Toppin is a board-certified OB/GYN with many years of experience in women’s health care. She graduated from Wellesley College. She received her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1982 and then completed her residency at Harlem Hospital, serving as Executive Chief Resident in her fourth year.
Her professional experience includes serving as clinical instructor at Columbia University College of Medicine, medical directorship of the Ossining Open Door Clinic in upstate New York and private practice in White Plains, New York.
